Fritz Seyfarth: A Pirate Story

For a span of decades between the 1960s and 1990s, a man named Fritz Seyfarth sailed the seas amid the Virgin Islands in search of adventure.

Among many things, Cap’n Fritz was an author, an adventurer, and a self-described “sea gypsy,” living aboard his faithful vessel, The Tumbleweed, for the vast majority of his years on the water. With a keen interest in piratical history, a natural love for sailing, and a relentless, personal charm, Fritz made friends virtually everywhere he went.

Fritz’s life was a veritable pirate story — and in more ways than one. Like any classic pirate, he sailed with only one good eye. When the motor of his boat went out, he simply removed it, preferring to navigate the treacherous coastlines by hand.

Few have ever led a life as interesting as that of Fritz Seyfarth.

This is his story.

Keepers of the Legacy

Though Fritz’s time on the water ended before he was ready, his legacy lives on in the many stories he told and the countless people he inspired. Fritz is survived by his two sons, both of whom remember their father for his humor, his wit, and his heart. They created this website to commemorate and celebrate his exceptionally unique life.

F. Robert Buchanan

Though not one for the ocean himself, Bob Buchanan remembers the time he spent sailing with Fritz fondly. Dr. Bob is a college professor of international business who travels the world, albeit by sky more often than sea. As Fritz’s oldest son, he had the privilege of meeting many of the old pirate’s friends in person when he came to visit.

A lifelong learner, Bob’s natural curiosity and sense of adventure drive him to explore the world around him. Much like his father, he left his career in oil work to pursue his passion. In Bob’s case, that means teaching and traveling. Bob currently lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with his wife and two sons.

Roy Buchanan

If anyone exemplifies the old pirate’s sense of adventure, it’s Roy Buchanan. The younger of Fritz’s boys by two years, he loves the ocean nearly as much as his father did. Even in his sixties, Roy makes time to go skydiving — a hobby of his since his early twenties.

Like his older brother and his father before them, Roy decided midway through his career in construction that he’d rather be doing something else. His volunteer work inspired him to go back to school for a degree in social work, which he still uses today. He currently lives in Oklahoma with his wife and son, both of whom skydive with him on occasion.

On behalf of both of Fritz’s sons, thank you for reading.
